Vancouver Island, located in British Columbia, Canada, is the largest Pacific island east of New Zealand. While the city of Vancouver stands on the North American mainland, Victoria, the capital city of British Columbia, is located on the island.
The island was first explored by Europeans when British and Spanish expeditions arrived in the late 18th century. It was originally named Quadra's and Vancouver's Island in commemoration of the friendly negotiations held by Spanish commander of the Nootka Sound settlement, Juan Francisco de la Bodega y Quadra, and by British naval captain George Vancouver in Nootka Sound in 1792, to find a solution to the Nootka Crisis. Quadra's name was eventually dropped and it has since been known solely as Vancouver Island. It is one of several North American locations named after George Vancouver, the British Royal Navy officer who explored the Pacific Northwest coast of North America between 1791 and 1794.
Along with most of the southern Gulf Islands, plus various minor islands offshore from its southern end, the southern part of Vancouver Island is the only part of British Columbia (and of Western Canada) that lies south of the 49th Parallel. The area has one of the warmest climates in Canada and since the mid-1990s has been mild enough in a few areas to grow subtropical Mediterranean crops such as olives and lemons.

Designed to assist with the shortage of available shelters for the approximately 2000 homeless people living in Greater Vancouver, the Temporary Homeless Relief Shelter (THRS) initiative acts as a complement to existing shelters and/or an alternative for those not wishing or able to access existing shelters. The initiative will operate with the assistance of the community for the winter months and will provide approximately 240 shelter beds per month.

Following the eviction of tenters at Oppenheimer park, Vancouver opened 2 new shelters for the city's homeless. Despite this effort, many say more beds- and more barriers- are not enough to fully address the problem. The city takes its name from the British navigator who landed here in 1792. The original settlement was called “Gastown”, in honor of Gassy Jack, who built the city’s first tavern. Gassy Jack and his makeshift pub may be long gone, but in the historic neighborhood of Gastown, his spirit lingers on. Vancouver’s early history continues at Waterfront Station, the western terminus of the Canadian Pacific Railway. Travel video about destination Vancouver in Canada. Vancouver is the third largest city in Canada and one of the most beautiful on the American continent, a dynamic metropolis set in a beautiful location with a temperate climate throughout the year. Close to the harbor area, the city's skyscrapers have proliferated in recent years. The capital of the southwestern province of British Columbia has developed into an economic centre of renown. The city's oldest buildings were built less than 100 years ago because the former wooden houses of old Vancouver were destroyed by fire. Several buildings reflect the origin of their inhabitants and are similar to those in the United States and Europe. Inspired by the Colosseum in Rome, an elegant structure of pink stone and glass, Canada Place, is lo...

I head into the forest to to build a primitive survival shelter using just my hands and no tools. This bushcraft shelter is ideal for a 24 hour survival situation. I forage for resources and use nature to my advantage. Using natural materials such as sticks and moss to build this primitive shelter. Building a bushcraft shelter can be a challenge, but by using minimal effort and your intuition you can work with nature to protect and provide for yourself. I scout the area for a fallen tree. I use the tree as a ridgepole for the A-frame shelter. Using sticks to support the frame of the shelter, I then use moss on the wood roof to keep the rain out. If I was looking to bug out, this would be the type of low-profile, stealth shelter that I would build. Here is a previous shelter I built using...

Finally what i thought was a perfect time to do a solo overnight in a snowstorm came. So i prepared to go spend the night in my Thatched reed winter survival shelter. I packed up my gear and loaded it all into the sled and hike out to the reed shelter. That storm dumped over a foot of snow in places but i was warm and cozy in the thatched reed hut. So much for survival i sat by the fire and whittled all night and got a good night sleep on my reed sleeping mat. I cooked and egg in the ashes and coals and roasted an apple for dinner . Woke up my sleeping fire Using my Fire banking methodI had put her to sleep the night before And had a good size fire going before I ever got out of bed. But Once I got up I made some coffee And stir-fry from thrive life. They make freeze-dried meal...

In this video I will be taking part in the 48hr Winter Survival and Bushcraft challenge organised by Joe O'Leary from Wilderness Survival Skills, using only a basic kit consisting of belt knife, pocket saw, fire steel, cooking pot, cup and a wool blanket. I build a natural shelter, a raised bed, fire reflector, pot hanger and a table using only the resources found in the woods. I then go on to make fire, filter and purify water, forage for some wild edible food, prepare game to eat and cook over my fire. This was an amazing experience for me and a chance to put some of the skills I've learned over the years to the test. I really hope you enjoy the video and thanks for watching!!
Murray Siple's feature-length documentary follows a group of homeless men who have combined bottle picking with the extreme sport of racing shopping carts down the steep hills of North Vancouver. This subculture depicts street life as much more than the stereotypes portrayed in mainstream media. The film takes a deep look into the lives of the men who race carts, the adversity they face and the appeal of cart racing despite the risk. Shot in high-definition and featuring tracks from Black Mountain, Ladyhawk, Vetiver, Bison, and Alan Boyd of Little Sparta. Directed by Murray Siple - 2008
